Why is breast cancer screening important? Facts and myths

There are many misunderstandings and myths in the public consciousness about breast cancer screening, which can discourage participation in screenings. It is important to clarify these, as screening is one of the most effective tools for the early detection of breast cancer.

"LEARN MORE, TAKE ACTION"
This series aims to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention, early detection, and the steps we can all take to reduce risk. By providing clear, actionable information on screenings, self-examinations, and lifestyle choices, we hope to empower women to take control of their health. Early detection saves lives, and through this initiative, we aim to dispel myths and encourage timely action for better outcomes.

Facts and myths:

  • Myth: “Only those with a family history of breast cancer need to get screened.”

o Fact: Although family history increases the risk, breast cancer can develop in anyone, even in those with no previous family occurrence. That’s why it is important for everyone to participate in screenings.

Myth: “If I don’t feel a lump, I don’t need a screening.”

o Fact: In the early stages of breast cancer, there is often no palpable lump. Mammography can detect changes that cannot be identified through self-exams.

Myth: “Mammography is painful and dangerous.”

o Fact: Mammography may cause minimal discomfort, but it is temporary, and skipping screening, which can be life-saving, is not worth it. Additionally, the radiation exposure during mammography is very low, and the benefits of screening far outweigh the risks.

Myth: “If I go for screenings, I don’t need to worry about breast cancer.”

o Fact: Screening is very important, but it does not provide complete protection. Self-exams, a healthy lifestyle, and regular medical check-ups together provide the best defense.

Screening can save lives, as early detection makes breast cancer much more treatable. Don’t delay your screening, as timely action can have a long-term impact on your health.

How does self-examination help in the early detection of breast cancer?

Self-examination plays a crucial role in the early detection of breast cancer, as it is one of the quickest and easiest ways to notice any unusual changes in the breast. Although self-examination does not replace medical screenings, it serves as an important complementary tool for early detection.

What can we do to reduce the risk of breast cancer?

Before thinking that simply leading a healthy lifestyle, exercising, and following a balanced diet can completely prevent cancer, we must inform everyone that this is not entirely the case. However, it’s correct to say that a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits can contribute to the development of breast cancer. Still, by making a few simple lifestyle changes, we can reduce the risks.

When is it worth going for a screening?

In Hungary only, malignant breast cancer is the second most common cause of death among cancer patients: more than 2,000 women die each year, and nearly 9,000 new cases are diagnosed.

BREAST CANCER - PREVENTION – TESTS

It cannot be said enough, yet we often let slip the importance of breast cancer prevention and self-examination.
