What can we do to reduce the risk of breast cancer?

Before thinking that simply leading a healthy lifestyle, exercising, and following a balanced diet can completely prevent cancer, we must inform everyone that this is not entirely the case. However, it’s correct to say that a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits can contribute to the development of breast cancer. Still, by making a few simple lifestyle changes, we can reduce the risks.

"LEARN MORE, TAKE ACTION"
This series aims to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention, early detection, and the steps we can all take to reduce risk. By providing clear, actionable information on screenings, self-examinations, and lifestyle choices, we hope to empower women to take control of their health. Early detection saves lives, and through this initiative, we aim to dispel myths and encourage timely action for better outcomes.

Lifestyle tips to reduce risk:

Healthy diet:

Consuming fresh vegetables, fruits (like apples), whole grains, nuts, and low-fat animal protein (like lean meats) can help reduce the risk of cancer. Avoid burnt fats, over-grilled meats, processed foods, and excessive consumption of animal fats. Completely avoid partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and excessive sugar intake.

Regular exercise:

At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week is recommended. This can include walking, running, swimming, or any other sport that helps maintain a healthy weight and strengthens the immune system.

Limit alcohol consumption:

Alcohol consumption is linked to the development of breast cancer, so it’s advisable to minimize or eliminate it.

Avoid smoking:

Smoking is linked to many cancers, including breast cancer. Quitting smoking can help prevent not only breast cancer but many other health problems as well.

How does self-examination help in the early detection of breast cancer?

Self-examination plays a crucial role in the early detection of breast cancer, as it is one of the quickest and easiest ways to notice any unusual changes in the breast. Although self-examination does not replace medical screenings, it serves as an important complementary tool for early detection.

When is it worth going for a screening?

In Hungary only, malignant breast cancer is the second most common cause of death among cancer patients: more than 2,000 women die each year, and nearly 9,000 new cases are diagnosed.

Why is breast cancer screening important? Facts and myths

There are many misunderstandings and myths in the public consciousness about breast cancer screening, which can discourage participation in screenings. It is important to clarify these, as screening is one of the most effective tools for the early detection of breast cancer.
